After the wildfires in Napa, we might see a lot of those people come north. In some years we get hammered so we don’t want to put all of our wine growing in one place.
We have been spreading out our vineyards geographically to mitigate potential damage from frost. We worry more about freeze control than wildfires. Too much vine stress can yield things you don’t want. Texture matters and we put less stress on our vines to get that texture. Wine that is rich, full-bodied elegant, supple and tastes good upon release but has great ageablility- 20 years plus. I want to make beautiful wine that communicates emotions. If I score it anything less than a 97 it gets declassified. Some years I kick out several tanks, but 2020 was a great brilliant vintage, so we didn’t pull many. Each year after all of the lots are done fermenting, I taste and rate each separate tank. We have the strictest grape selection of anyone on the planet. We are growers at heart and we are entirely estate grown, it all starts there we bring in perfect fruit.
Our wines are literally built from the ground up, with intent.
